Osteoporosis is a very treatable condition.
Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become fragile from lack of calcium and other minerals. It can affect any bone in the human body, but its primary targets are the hips, spine and wrists. Osteoporosis has no other outward signs or symptoms and can go undetected in both men and women unless they have had a bone density test. Most people don't even know they have osteoporosis. It is not commonly known that it is actually a very treatable condition. One of the best osteoporosis treatments of all is weight-bearing exercise under close physical therapist supervision. As part of our osteoporosis program, we educate patients about which exercises to avoid and which to perform – postural exercises, stretching exercises and balance activities. Participation in our program will benefit anyone diagnosed with osteoporosis.
Brittle bones that fracture easily, often caused by a fall, is the primary problem for osteoporosis patients. Falls can easily be avoided. A simple fall risk screening performed by a physical therapist can lead to the proper treatment and training to minimize the likelihood of a fall.
